Farm

Bodegas Montebaco is located in the province of Valladolid, between the towns of Valbuena de Duero and Pesquera de Duero, in a valley with an altitude between 840 and 900 meters, with limestone slopes and generally clay-limestone soils. The altitude and soil give it its own characteristics and make it “An island in the Ribera del Duero”. Montebaco wines are born there, wines with personality made from nine neighboring but incomparable plots.

The Monte Alto farm is crossed by the Jaramiel stream that flows thirty kilometers further down, into the Duero River. On the Estate, both the houses and the warehouses have been maintained with stone and adobe construction. Some structures have been converted taking advantage of those that were on the agricultural-livestock property, preserving the walls, some almost a meter wide. These constructions keep very well the optimal characteristics to preserve the wine, integrating and always taking care to harmonize the aesthetic with the technological.

Bodegas Montebaco has always had a defined objective, the creation of high quality aged wines. These wines stand out for their essential aging process in oak barrels, achieving an admirable fusion between fruit and wood. The winery’s philosophy is based on respect for the environment and the environment that surrounds it. The aim is to allow the wines to authentically reflect their origin. The importance of our terroir is based on the conviction that each strain can only be harvested in a specific place and at a specific time.

The strains grown include the varieties of Merlot, Grenache, Malbec and mainly, Tinto Fino, which constitutes the basis of our viticulture with 53 hectares. The planting of these vines began in 1987. Since then, we have carried out root and varietal grafts in the field, highlighting the crucial importance of the provenance of the wood used. The latter is obtained from local vineyards that have been carefully mass-selected by our technical department. Special attention is paid to the productive and quality characteristics that distinguish the fine red wine from this region compared to other Tempranillo clones grown in different geographical areas of Spain.

Montebaco’s wine range does not follow the classic Ribera del Duero classification (joven, crianza, reserva…); instead, it is guided by the origin of the grapes and the winemaking process:

Montebaco de Finca is the flagship wine, crafted from different plots within the Monte Alto Estate using Tempranillo grapes. With a slightly longer aging period in barrels, it can be described as the most classic in the range, a true Ribera.

Selección Especial is a wine that is not produced every year, only in vintages where the specific characteristics for its crafting are met, with a very limited production of between 5,000 and 6,000 bottles.

Montebaco Parcela Cara Norte is a 100% Tempranillo wine from organic farming, sourced from a single plot located on a slope reaching nearly 900 meters in altitude, with highly limestone soils and a quite pronounced incline.

Semele is made with 95% Tempranillo and 5% Merlot. This wine seeks a perfect balance between fruit and wood, with 12 months of barrel aging.

Montebaco Rosado has been crafted with Merlot grapes (between 25% and 50%) and the remainder Tempranillo. It is fermented in French oak barrels and matured for 2 months on its lees in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

Montebaco Rueda is a white wine made from selected Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc grapes within the Rueda Designation of Origin. The goal is to obtain a wine with the aromatic intensity and complexity of the Verdejo and Sauvignon varieties: notes of tropical fruit alongside its herbaceous character. Full-bodied, with an elegant bitter touch on the finish.
